On Wednesday, 30 November, community members, parents, well- wishers, students and staff of the Vivien Vanterpool Primary School converged at the Hilltop Baptist Church in Island Harbour to award students for their outstanding performances in the local reading examinations for the academic year 2015-2016.
The auspicious occasion marked the second annual reading award of its kind at the school. This year’s award was sponsored by the family of the late Mr. Atlin Noralda Harrigan and, as such, was held in his honour, under the theme: “Read to Succeed”. A total of 43 students were awarded. Additionally, presentation were made to students who achieved averages of 80% and above on the various Test of Standards exams. Special recognition was made to Tr. Margarita Boland for her admirable commitment to Remedial Reading at the school.
Among those in attendance was Mr. Terry Harrigan, Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly, who passionately captured Mr. Atlin Harrigan’s (his uncle’s) contribution to nation building and education through a profound description: “He lived for his family and community”, Harrigan said “He was a dedicated servant of the people of Anguilla. He was a shining symbol and one of the most outstanding figures in Anguilla. He dedicated his life and limb for what he believed was fair and just for his people.”
Mr. Paul Harrigan, Second Nominated Member in the House, and the Hon. Palmavon Webster, Leader of the Opposition, also offered commendations and good counsel to the awardees and those in attendance.
The principal, staff and students of the Vivien Vanterpool Primary wish to express sincere gratitude to all who made the event a complete success. Special thanks to the family of the late Mr. Atlin Noralda Harrigan, Pastor Gareth Hodge & congregation, Hon. Palmavon Webster, Mr.Othlyn Vanterpool, Mrs. N’Jeri Richardson-Carty, Mr. Frankie Claxton, the P.T.A Executive Team and the school community. The results of your actions are proof that it still takes a community to raise a child.”
