The Anguilla Methodist Circuit is well into a series of activities in observance of Youth Month – November. It is one of the ways of the Methodist Church – in the Leeward Islands District of the Caribbean and the Americans – to meet the spiritual and social needs of its young people, and to keep them in the fold of the various congregations.
The theme of Youth Month in Anguilla is: Jesus our Firm Foundation. Reclaim, Strengthen, Expand. “That’s a powerful theme, and it is the theme for the month as the young people celebrate their youth while it lasts,” Reverend Lindsay Richardson commented. He was at the time delivering the sermon on Sunday evening, November 13, at Ebenezer Chapel in The Valley. “The fact that the doors of this building are still open indicates that you are not being bullied into accepting this position or claim. It is a choice. It is up to you. You can determine to accept this claim for yourself and, if so, draw near to understand all that it means for the rest of us; or you are free to go – the doors are open.
“Freedom of choice is a fundamental God-given right…The Planning Committee made a bold statement in declaring that ‘Jesus is our Firm Foundation’ – not Mohammed, not Salassie, not alcohol or drugs or money; not wealth or fame or good looks, long hair or crimpy hair; not even timble heel shoes, but Jesus is our Firm Foundation. That is the claim; that is the message. That is the acclamation we are asking you to embrace and adopt.”
Reverend Richardson advised the young people: “If you choose to affirm that Jesus the Christ is your foundation, and you believe this with all your heart, your mind and your strength, I guarantee you that no matter what the devil throw at you, he will never sweep you off this foundation. S uch a foundation is firm, secure and strong, tried and proven…You have to be diligent and alert and sober because there is such a thing as a devil who is up and down the streets and alleys of Anguilla looking for every…young person to mess up their lives.”
The Youth Service was moderated by Minister-in-Training, Reverend Wilmoth Hodge, and the Prayers of Intercession were led by the Superintendent of the Anguilla Methodist Circuit, the Reverend Dr. Wycherley Gumbs.
The Methodist Circuit Youth Month will climax with a march of witness on Sunday, November 27.
