The Anguilla Electricity Company (ANGLEC), which successfully established a solar farm – earlier this year – adjacent to its Corito power station, is to explore wind energy as another form of electricity generation in 2017.

This was disclosed by the company’s General Manager, Mr. David Gumbs. He was at the time delivering an address at the ANGLEC-sponsored 10th Annual Primary School Awards Ceremony.

“ANGLEC has been serving the people of Anguilla for twenty-five years. We are striving to be the lead energy provider in the Caribbean,” he stated. “We are striving to lead the way in renewable energy generation. We have met our first milestone in our drive, this year, by installing and commissioning a one megawatt solar farm that generates over two million kilowatt hours of renewable energy each year. That is sufficient to power at least 600 Anguillian homes. That’s one milestone. If our goal is to generate 10 megawatts of power, and we have installed one megawatt of solar power, it means we have 9 more megawatts to reach our goal of a 100 percent renewable energy.

“Our goal is to continue to pursue our renewable energy initiatives. This year we did solar and next year we intend doing wind. Soon you will see wind turbines, like a big fan, somewhere in Anguilla, generating renewable energy that will be powering everything using electricity.”
