Once again, the Saint James School of Medicine contributed to the well-being of the Anguillian community.
Eleven members of staff of the Zenaida Haven Juvenile Rehabilitation Centre (ZH-JRC), Department of Probation, benefited from a free CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) and First Aid Training sessionhosted by the St. James School of Medicine. It was an official American Heart Association Heart Savers Course taught by certified American Heart Association Instructors: Ms. Amanda Ritchie, BLS/ACLS/PALS Instructor; Ms. Jazmin Oliver, BLS Instructor, and Mr. Steve Terry.
The course lasted about two and a half hours. The instructors took time to make sure everyone understood the procedures and could carry out the tasks successfully.
The first part of the training was CPR – both for adults and infants. The course included video presentations, demonstration, practice and consolidation after each topic. The participants were also exposed to the use of AED (Automated External Defibrilator).
Following the CPR training was an hour of Basic First Aid instructions which included dealing with stroke, bleeding, allergic reactions and seizures.
After the training, all the participants received HeartSaver First Aid CPR AED certificates.
The St James School of Medicine plans to give similar courses to other groups /institutions on the island to equip participants with knowledge and skills to save lives. If interested, you can contact Ms. Amanda Ritchie at Amanda@anguillacpr.org.
