Mr. Clive Claud Davison Carty, the widely-known late resident of North Hill, was the recipient of many parting accolades from family and friends for his life of service to Anguilla, and its people, over the years.
Mr. Carty, 73, died on September 13, 2016. A large number of persons turned out at Farewell Service for him at Zion Methodist Church, in his home village, on Wednesday, September 21, and a Service of Thanksgiving on Thursday, September 22, at Bethel Methodist Church.
Clive was one of those hard-working and committed Anguillian nationals who inspired others while trying to elevate himself; and who diligently and patriotically served his country without seeking or receiving reward. It is hoped that his quality of service, love and dedication, will secure for him, in an unappreciative world, a grateful and honourable mention in the annals of Anguilla’s history.
Mr. Colville Petty, Clive’s long-time friend and public service colleague, catalogued his contributions to Anguilla as a college-trained educator; university-trained public service Administrator and Permanent Secretary; hotel General Manager, Chairman of the Tourist Board; Chairman of the National Bank of Anguilla and Chairman of the Anguilla Public Service Commission.
Writing the Formal Remembrance in the funeral brochure, Mr. Petty, the respected historian, wrote this concluding and reflective paragraph:
“Clive departed this life on Tuesday 13th September 2016 after serving his country and people with distinction: as an educator, a senior public servant, a founding member of the tourism industry which is Anguilla’s life-blood, a travel agent, Chairman of the National Bank of Anguilla, a photographer, a renowned community worker, a Sunday School teacher. What more could we have asked of him? He gave us his all.
“Well done, our good and faithful servant.”
Mr. David Carty, another of Clive’s friends and his North Hill neighbour, delivered a tribute at the Service of Thanksgiving in which he also looked at the departed Anguillian life and service. The full text of that tribute is printed next to this article.
Clive’s son, Davon, in delivering the eulogy said, among other things, that his father was way ahead of his time in his thinking, approach to life and national interest – as well as the concept of development of Anguilla and the welfare of its people.
The Service of Thanksgiving was jointly conducted by the Rev. Dr. Wycherley Gumbs, Rev. Velina Petit and Rev, Wilmoth Hodge. Rev. Gumbs prefaced his sermon by recalling his boyhood days when he grew up in North Hill with Clive and the enjoyable interaction and friendship they shared in those early days.
