The first Diabetes Youth Camp organized by the Anguilla Diabetes Association was held on July 14th and 15th 2016 at the Soroptimist Centre. The participants’ ages ranged from 9 to 17 years. This group comprised of persons with Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, as well as supporters (relatives and friends). Six of these participants were diagnosed with diabetes while two were diagnosed as pre- diabetes.
The incidence of diabetes among children is increasing. Type 2 diabetes which was previously more prevalent in adults is now occurring more among children. The Anguilla Diabetes Association will continue its efforts to increase awareness of diabetes, educate the community about diabetes, prevent diabetes and assist in the management of diabetes.
Participants of the Diabetes Youth Camp were engaged in interactive, fun-filled learning experiences that increased their knowledge of diabetes as well as fostered friendships. Activities included a visit to the hydroponic plant at Cuisinart Resort and Spa, a physical exercise session and a variety of games. Other sessions included discussions on diabetes – myths and facts, nutrition, diabetes disaster preparedness, diabetes emergencies, psychological support, and ‘Ask Your Doctor’.
At the closing ceremony, each participant made a presentation in the form of art and storytelling to express their feelings and share the knowledge acquired. Most of them expressed with confidence their willingness to manage their condition now, their gratitude for the opportunity to share their experiences with other young people, their realization that they are not alone with their diagnosis and that they can live a productive, happy life. Some of the comments of the participants were as follows:
“I learned a lot about diabetes and I will eat healthier meals now.”
“I will encourage my friend to control her diabetes and not let diabetes control her.”
“I really enjoyed this camp.”
Another outcome of the camp was the setting up of a group chat on WhatsApp which made communication with one another quicker and easier. Future plans include establishing a youth arm of the Anguilla Diabetes Association as well as organising the camp annually. Additionally, the youth group will liaise with other youth diabetes groups regionally and internationally.
This Diabetes Youth Camp became a reality as a result of the efforts of the following persons who ably facilitated and/or organized the activities: Mrs Marissa Hughes of Dungeon Gym, Mrs Vernice Battick, Ms Monique Rey, Mrs Dana Ruan, Dr Minnet Singh, Mrs Twyla Bradshaw-Richardson, Ms Agnes Brooks, Ms Sherry-Ann Roberts, Mrs Ellenita Harrigan, Mrs Lelia Richardson and the parents of the participants.
