The third GGETT Camp, designed to expose young women to various possible career areas in non-traditional careers, was held at ALHCS during the week of July 4th – 8th. Thirty participants explored the areas of: electronics engineering, design challenges, robotics, programming and woodworking. Each area focused on projects that demonstrate basic concepts for the subject area. The participants completed projects such as creating a circuit bug, projects built with littleBits and Chibitronics, designing a nest, which can withstand hurricanes and earthquakes, for Angry Birds’ and a take home wood project using scroll saws and sanding machines.
This year the facilitators included Eva Hodge and Jeritiza Samuel (on release from ANGLEC) in the area of Electronics/Electrical Engineering, Kieran Kentish and Janis McKeag in the areas of Design Challenge (construction) and Robotics, and Franklin Brandon with Koyleisha Richardson (a former participant of GGETT Camps) in the area of Woodworking.
On the final day of camp, the young women displayed their work and invited parents and family to come and see. All guests were very impressed with their work which the girls were excited to demonstrate. The Honourable Evans Macniel Rogers, Minister of Social Development, presented certificates to the participants. This GGETT was sponsored with funds from the Caribbean Development Bank, ANGLEC and the Ministry of Social Development.
