On Monday 18th July, a 12 member contingent of national basketball players left Anguilla to represent the island in St Maarten for the annual Battle of the Fittest Basketball tournament.
The tournament now in its 3rd year began on Monday 18th July and will conclude on Sunday 24th, July. The tournament sees representation from St Martin, Dominican Republic, Tortola, Aruba, Anguilla, Philippines, the USA & host country St Maarten.
Members of the Anguillian National Team are Knoltan Bramble, Daury Herbert, Ricardo Gumbs, Aaron Gumbs, Neil Gumbs, Junior Rogers, Ricky Coombs, Elisban Valera, Jason Hodge, Incia Brooks, Javille Brooks and Moises Retde Oliver. Accompanying the team are Head Coach, Ian ‘Tucker’ Connor, Assistant Coach Delano Mussington and Team Manager Lisa Rey.
The team participated in their first game on Monday July 18th against French St. Martin. They were not victorious, however, they remain hopeful that they can turn things around in their other games, the next one will be against BVI on Thursday July 21st.
The Anguilla Amateur Basketball Association wishes to extend a thank you to the Government of Anguilla, in particular the Department of Sports and the Anguilla Social Security Board for their generous contributions to the team. Expressions of thanks are also extended to all persons who aided and supported in all fundraising efforts. Special mention is to be made of Mrs Angela Brooks-Cornell for her selfless assistance where needed.
The National team will return to Anguilla on Monday 25th July, 2016. We wish them the best of luck in their undertakings.
