One of Anguilla’s former long-serving and respected school teachers, Ms. Averil Anette Carty, of Sandy Ground, was laid to rest on Saturday, June 18, following a moving Thanksgiving Service at the Bethel Methodist Church, South Hill.
The officiating Ministers were: the Rev. Dr. Wycherley Gumbs, Rev. Marie Petit; Rev. D. H. Clifton Niles; Rev. Joseph Lloyd; and Rev. Lindsay Richardson. The eulogy was delivered by her son, Reverend Hugo Rey, and Mr. Iwandai Gumbs of Upbeat Radio.
The late Ms. Carty was trained at the Teachers’ Training College in Antigua. She taught in Anguilla at the then Road Primary School, East End Primary School, West End Primary School, Valley Primary School and The Valley Girls School for many years. A group of her former primary school students at West End joined other groups and individuals in paying tribute to her in song and other expressions of love and appreciation.
As a mark of respect, flags were flown at half-mast on the day preceding, and on the day of, her funeral. It was an arrangement, by the Ministry of Home Affairs, as part of an honour system for persons recognised for outstanding contributions to the island.
Ms. Carty was born on June 4, 1924 and died on May 24, 2016. She was laid to rest in the Bethel Methodist Churchyard Cemetery.
