Sunshine Theatre, in collaboration with the Department of Youth and Culture and the UWI Open Campus Anguilla, is pleased to present Jamaican comedian, television and film actor Stogie Amir Kenyatta, with his award-winning One Man Broadway Show – “The World Is My Home”: The Life and Times of Paul Robeson at the Anguilla Great House on Wednesday June 8th, 2016.
This entertaining, educational, laugh-out loud, music-filled show chronicles the life of Paul Robeson, an African-American, Activist, Singer, Lawyer and Athlete. Complete with audience participation and call-outs, the show covers Robeson’s friendships with Kwame Nkrumah, Jomo Kenyatta, Nmabi Azikiwe, Langston Hughes, Albert Einstein, Cab Calloway and W.E.B. Dubois with whom he co-founded the Organization of African Unity (OAU).
Winner of the NAACP Theater “Best One Person Show” Award, this show, like Robeson’s life, serves as a cultural ambassador inspiring descendants of enslaved Africans to greater achievements and a more noble life. Robeson was the son of a preacher who graduated top of his class and valedictorian in 1919 and received a Law Degree from Columbia University, two years later. An adamant fighter for social justice and the liberation of Africa and Black America, Paul Robeson was a symbol of our developing Black consciousness; armed with nothing more than the strength of his convictions, his love for humanity and his vision of a world where men live as brothers. His message was his life.
“This is more than just a show for me,” says Kenyatta. “It’s a prayer for the forsaken and forgotten; a story of heart and hope, of broken promises and broken dreams; a love song for the brave and broken-hearted enslaved Africans in America, who found enough forgiveness in their tortured souls to live, laugh and love.” This show seeks to remind us that we are “sharing this brief moment in time on this third Rock from the Sun and to embrace our common humanity with kindness.”
Anguilla is one of five islands, including Antigua, Montserrat, St. Kitts/Nevis and St. Martin participating in the maiden voyage of this culturally significant world tour. Tickets are available at the UWI Open Campus Anguilla, Department of Youth & Culture, the Anguilla Great House, Anguilla Drug Store and Sunshine Theatre (telephone 476 -7430/497-8156).
