Anguillian poet and revolutionary heroine, Mrs. Daisy “Wong” Richardson is slated for special recognition at the 2016 Malliouhana Poetry Competition Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, 11 May at the Public Library in The Valley. Daisy “Wong” or “ Dee”, as she is affectionately known, is noted for her recitations at public functions across Anguilla and beyond. She is also the author of “Li’l Bit A Guinea Corn Porridge”, a collection of poems published in 1997 to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Anguilla Revolution.
Organised by the University of the West Indies Open Campus Anguilla in collaboration with the Anguilla Library Service, the Department of Youth and Culture and the Anguilla Community College, the Malliouhana Poetry Competition seeks to encourage literacy and artistic expression, as well as to promote an ethos of social, cultural, and political awareness. The Competition forms part of the programme of activities for the Anguilla Day Celebrations and this year’s theme “Revolution Tomorrow: rumblings, perceptions, aspirations…” is in keeping with the focus leading up to the 50th Anniversary of the Anguilla Revolution.
Over the years the competition has attracted entries from over one hundred poets from all age ranges and this year the Committee has received a total of twenty-six (26) submissions for the “Poetry on the Page” and the “Spoken Word/Performance Poetry” segments in the Junior and Senior categories.
Last year’s competition was dedicated to the memory of Educator, Poet and Cultural Activist, Linda T. Lake and saw a large turnout of more than one hundred and fifty family members, friends and poetry enthusiasts. The general public is again invited to support the artistes and show their appreciation of Mrs. Daisy “Wong” Richardson at the Performance Round and the Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, 11 May 2016 at 6:00 p.m. at the Public Library.
