The Anguilla Cricket Association handed over much needed equipment to support Kiddie Cricket across Anguilla, on Wednesday April 20th.
Kiddie Cricket is part of the West Indies Cricket Board’s (WICB) list of programmes. It is sponsored by Scotiabank, an international bank. In speaking to the media, President of the Anguilla Cricket Association, Mr. Ralph Hodge, commented: “This is…a replenishment to the equipment which have been given approximately four years ago to support Kiddie Cricket in Anguilla”. He further noted that this time around, all primary schools on Anguilla will benefit as well as organizations such as the Boys Brigade, Scouts and Pathfinders. To this end he said: “The aim now is to ensure that there is a wider reach by circulating the gear to these groups. This will also ensure that the game is not only played in schools but also in extra curricular activities. The game can also stay alive through these groups as more youngsters are exposed”.
The brightly coloured equipment was designed to make the game safer for young children while remaining just as enjoyable as with the equipment used by the older players. Each kit contains specially designed bats, balls, cones and stumps with safety as a priority. The equipment also sports the WICB logo, Scotiabank logo and the Kiddie Cricket brand. Mr. Ralph Hodge described it as a much “a softer design for the kids that make it [cricket] more attractive and appealing to youngsters. It contains all elements of the game”. It is hoped that this serves as a starter in what could be future career cricketers.
