As plans continue to formally recognise the contributions of the late Julian Harrigan to the University of the West Indies on Anguilla, Alumni and Friends have begun making their contributions to the Scholarship Fund named in his honour.
Organised by the UWI Open Campus Anguilla in collaboration with the Steering Committee of the UWI Alumni Association – Anguilla Chapter, the Recognition/Appreciation Ceremony and formal launch of the Julian R. Harrigan Memorial Scholarship Fund is slated for Saturday, 9th April 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at the Teachers’ Resource Centre in the Valley.
Amongst the early donors to the Scholarship Fund is local businessman/philanthropist, Mr. Albert Lake, who presented the organisers with a cheque for US$1,000.00. During the handover, the soon-to-be ninety-year-old benefactor applauded Mr. Harrigan’s contribution to education and the development of young people on Anguilla. He also expressed the hope that his “small” donation would help to assist the Scholarship recipients. Mr. Lake also appealed to other businesses and organisations to support the cause for the sake of Anguilla. So far donations/pledges have come from the family of Mr. Harrigan, Digicel, Joyce Kentish and Associates, as well other UWI Alumni and Friends.
The late Julian Harrigan served as the Representative for the University of the West Indies on Anguilla from 1989 – 2006 and as Consultant to the UWI School of Continuing Studies from 2006-2007. As the first Resident Tutor, he was instrumental in promoting the University’s programmes on Anguilla, as well as the construction and opening of the University Centre. A former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Administration, he was also very involved in youth and social work, as well as the cultural life of the island.
The Julian R. Harrigan Memorial Scholarship Fund is intended to assist deserving students enrolled in the University of the West Indies Open Campus’ Social Work, Youth Development and Public Administration Programmes, all areas in which Mr. Harrigan was involved. The UWI Open Campus Anguilla/Steering Committee of the UWI Alumni Association Anguilla Chapter is expressing gratitude to all those who have contributed to the Fund thus far. The general public and UWI Alumni in particular are invited to share in the Recognition/Appreciation Ceremony and formal launch of the Scholarship Fund on Saturday, 9th April 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at the Teachers’ Resource Centre.
