A 100-year-old UK national, – from North Wales – Mrs. Margaret Jones, who has been residing in Anguilla for the past three years, is the recipient of a Birthday Card from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Second.
“That’s marvellous, and I am so delighted,” she exclaimed when the card was presented to her by Governor Christina Scott on Saturday evening, April 2, 2016. “What a lovely picture of the Queen on the card – and oh – she dyes her hair,” Mrs. Jones’ remarked. Her expression generated much humour among the large gathering. A visiting friend, seated next to her, explained: “It is really the rim of the Queen’s hat. See, her hair is just as white as yours.” Satisfied, the centenarian remarked: “Oh, I see”.
The message from the Queen read: “I am so pleased to know that you are celebrating your 100th Birthday on 2nd April, 2016. I send my congratulations and best wishes to you on such a special occasion.
“Elizabeth R”.
Mrs. Jones is the mother of Dental Surgeon, Dr. John Jones, who first served in Anguilla thirty-five years ago. A lover of Anguilla, he is back on the island, still working at the Dental Unit in The Valley, and is building a retirement home in the Swing High/Little Harbour area. This time he brought his mother with him to take care of her.
Mrs. Jones shares her son’s delight for the island. “I love Anguilla,” she said, as a BBC 2 film crew, now filming a series of island life events, focused their camera on her.
According to Dr. Jones, his mother was born in a family’s farmhouse in North Wales on April 2, 1916. “She was a Nursing Sister working under my father,” he added. “He was awarded the MBE for his work with young psychopaths and she was the only female member of staff. I myself grew up in this strange environment. She has lived with me now for three years. The truth is: it is a privilege to look after your mother.”
