In keeping with the commitment to the continuous training and development of officers of the Royal Anguilla Police Force (RAPF), Commissioner of Police, Paul Morrison recently met with the Manager of the UWI Open Campus British Overseas Territories, Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks, to discuss the University’s Community Policing and other relevant programmes.

Of particular interest was the UWI Community Policing programme, which was developed in collaboration with the regional Caribbean Association of Commissioners of Police. The certificate programme has a specific focus on the Caribbean and consists of two courses:

• Introduction to Community Policing and

• Community Policing Strategies for the Caribbean Context

According to Dr. Fleming-Banks, the aim of the programme is to prepare law enforcement officers and other criminal justice practitioners to respond to the universal demand from ordinary citizens and civil society for greater efficiency, partnership and problem solving in law enforcement. Topics include “The Criminal Justice System and the Community”, “Community Relations and Policing”, “Youths at Risk”, “Ethics in Law Enforcement”, “Collaborative Problem Solving”, “Conflict Resolution and Mediation”, “Risk Assessment” and “Managing and Facilitating Community Policing”.

The programme, which was previously delivered online, is now offered in the traditional face-to-face mode, and is open to Police Officers, Special Constables, Security and other law enforcement or interested personnel.

“We are pleased with Commissioner Morrison’s interest in this timely programme, because the BOTS are already leading the way in implementing this important training”, says Dr. Fleming-Banks. Members of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service completed Part One last year and are scheduled to commence Part Two this month, while BVI and Montserrat have already expressed an interest. So we look forward to launching the programme here on Anguilla.”

Persons or companies interested in the programme are encouraged to contact the UWI Open Campus Anguilla Site at anguilla@open.uwi.edu or telephone 497-8156.
