On Sunday evening, 28th February, the Bethel Methodist Chapel was washed in brilliant colours as a large and appreciative crowd gathered to celebrate the musical traditions of the black experience. The occasion was an exciting Black Heritage Concert put on by the Methodist Church under the direction of the Superintendent Minister, the Rev Wycherley Gumbs.
Choirs dressed in African inspired clothing, representing all the six congregations from throughout the circuit, including Children; youth; and men’s choirs, performed traditional negro spirituals and gospel songs. These were interspersed by solos and spoken word presentations. The music ranged from deep and soulful spirituals, to pulsating African rhythms and everything in between. Also joining in the celebration were special guest artistes for the evening, Sister Susan Best-Richardson, and Sister Agatha Richardson.
The event, chaired by Dr Phyllis Fleming-Banks, was staged in honour of Sister Jean Hodge, wife of retired Methodist Minister, the Rev Dr. S. Wilfred Hodge, to celebrate her service and accomplishments in the field of music in the MCCA, and beyond, over the past sixty years. In giving a tribute to Sister Jean, Rev. Hodge kept the crowd captivated with a review of her exploits, given in his own inimitable style which was both amusing and informative.
Speaking at the close of the event, Rev Gumbs thanked all the individuals and choirs who took part. He especially thanked Sister Yolande Hodge the visionary behind the annual celebration, who, although she was involved in the initial planning, was unable to be present at the programme this year.
