Mr. Trevor Queeley, Vice President of the Anguilla Chapter of the UWI Open Campus Guild of Students and other members of the local Student Body were on hand to welcome the latest group of new students at the University’s Semester Two Site Orientation session last week. Queeley, who is one of this year’s winners of the American Foundation of the University of the West Indies (AFUWI) Scholarships, encouraged his fellow students to work hard and take advantage of the supportive network that was geared to ensuring their success.

The students who are beginning and/or continuing their academic journey at the UWI this January, are drawn from a wide cross-section of the public and private sectors and are enrolled in the University’s undergraduate and post graduate degree programmes.
The local Site Orientation session is in addition to the online orientation afforded to the new students, says Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks, Manager for the UWI Open Campus British Overseas Territories. It is all aimed at preparing them for success in their various programmes, which include Education, Social Work, Youth Development, Early Childhood and Family Life, Criminology, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, as well as Tourism and Hospitality Management, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Human Resources, Financial Management, Accounting and Paralegal Studies.

“We are pleased with the growing number of students who are taking advantage of the opportunity to continue their education by enrolling in University’s programmes,” she said. The Open Campus of the University of the West Indies is dedicated to taking the UWI to the non-residential campus areas of our region and it provides the unique opportunity for students to obtain an accredited world-class education at a fraction of the external costs, while continuing to meet their employment, family and other commitments. Our students are continually amazed that they can remain at home and earn a world Bachelor’s or Master’s degree for less than US$11,000.00 or a Master’s Degree for under US$8,000.00, and more and more of our people are taking advantage of this opportunity,” says the UWI Official.

Semester Two at the UWI officially began on 18 January with the launch of the online programmes. The local face-to-face, on site workforce professional development programmes begin on 1st February.
