The Student Council of the Anguilla Community College (ACC) hosted a very successful games evening on Saturday, 16th January 2016 in the main room of the ACC. The primary game played by attendees was chess. This initiative was devised by ACC’s Student Council President, Junior Neville Hamilton (Hamie) and his team.
Hamie envisioned the games evening as an opportunity for students, faculty, staff and persons from the community, that is, retired nurses, teachers, preachers, businessmen, housewives, construction workers, children and others, to frequent the premises of the Anguilla Community College and “share their experiences and provide guidance and support to those who are in pursuit of professional and personal goals while also having fun.”

The first games evening was held on Saturday 19th December 2015. There were only four persons in attendance including the chess instructor, Mr. Leonard Telemaque, a teacher at the Morris Vanterpool Primary School. Mr. Telemaque was instrumental in establishing chess clubs within the primary schools some years prior and was excited when approached to conduct a similar venture at the Anguilla Community College. A warm thank you is extended to Mr. Telemaque for his enthusiasm in this venture. President of the Anguilla Community College, Professor Louden, moved with inspiration and vision donated towards the implementation of a chess club at ACC that night.
There was a large turnout of children and adults at the second games evening. Most attendees came to learn and/or play the game of chess. Mrs. Brooks-Johnson, Assistant Registrar responsible for Student Services, shared “it was wonderful to see so many children who are so enthusiastic about the game of chess. We commend the parents who brought their children out to play and those who were learning the game with them. A big thank you is extended to all other members of the community who joined us for an engaging evening of chess.”
The next games evening will be on the 6th of February, 2016 at 7 pm. In addition to chess, there will be table tennis and dominoes. The Student Council and other groups at the College, including the Hospitality Club look forward to continued support from the community.
