The world in which Jesus was born was very turbulent. Palestine was occupied by the Romans, which led to deep resentment and uprisings to overthrown the foreign power; illness of every kind left the people bewildered; and there were many factions in the society with deep seated hatred of each other. They yearned for deliverance, security and peace. The message of the angels of ‘peace on earth and good will to all persons on whom his favour rests’ did not fit their expectations.
We too are facing perilous times: military conflicts, terrorism, economic challenges, family and personal tragedies. We hunger for peace which would bring our troubles to an end. Peace, lasting peace will not be found in externals which are fleeting and temporary. The answer to our need is found in the angels’ message given over 2,000 years ago. Are we too so preoccupied with ourselves and our concerns that we are failing to hear the angels’ message? Jesus, the Prince of peace offers us all the gift of peace during this festive season. It is a peace which the world cannot give or take away. St. Paul described the quality of this peace in this way: “Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand” (Philippians 4:7 CEV). Share that gift of peace with some one this festive season. It is the greatest gift of all. Peace and goodwill to all this festive season and a New Year of blessings be your portion.
