The Department of Education staged the first annual elocution event in memory of Teacher George Reginald Austin Wenham who was a teacher at the Old Boys School. The event took place on November 12th, 2015 at the Landsome Bowl Centre.
Teacher Wenham had much zeal, enthusiasm and was the perfect example for fostering the things that meant for good in the world. He was an inspiration to many young men making their lives worthwhile, and making them better men than they otherwise would have been.
The contest took the form of a choral speaking competition among the six public primary schools. This activity aimed at honing the public speaking abilities of our students as part of the Literacy development programme. The specific objectives were to:
1. Promote effective communication skills among the students
2. Improve/enhance their language awareness and usage
3. Build their vocabulary
4. Develop their comprehension skills and problem solving skills
5. Foster teamwork and an appreciation for language/the written word
6. Promote the development and practice of social skills while boosting their confidence.
The 2015 winners were:
• 1st place- Morris Vanterpool and Adrian T. Hazell Primary School
• 2nd place -Alwyn A. Richardson Primary School
• 3rd place-Valley Primary School.
