A series of public consultations on the Banking Bill 2015, gave insights to various groups of people in Anguilla in the run-up to the actual introduction and first reading of the draft legislation in the House of Assembly on Monday, November 16.
The consultations, over the days following the disruption in the House of Assembly, on Monday, November 9, were conducted in The Valley and in the eastern and western areas of the island by members of the Government.
Critics charged that the consultations should have been held much earlier, as the people of Anguilla thought the Bill was suddenly taken to the House of Assembly without their prior understanding of its provisions.
There are calls in Anguilla for the Bill, a sub-regional initiative of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, to be amended in several sections to allay the fears of persons. A Government delegation, headed by Chief Minister Banks, travelled to St. Kitts on Tuesday this week for discussions with the officials of the Central Bank (and others) on a number of proposed suggestions and comments from members of the Anguillian public.
