The Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School Literary and Debating Society (ALHCS LDS), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Development, Department of Youth and Culture (DYC), Department of Health and Protection and the Anguilla Social Security Board, held its 3rd annual inter-house Environmental Debates Competition. The debates were held from 16th – 18th November at the Soroptimist Centre.
The topics debated were centered on issues facing the Anguillian society as well as the global community. They were:
“Present attitudes to integrated vector management in Anguilla are reflective of a less developed society”;
“Social networking and social networking sites are responsible for deviant behavior amongst young people”;
“Peer pressure is the main reason so many youngsters end up as deviants”;
“Occupational health and safety legislation is the only effective way to protect workers’ health, safety and wellbeing in the work place”.
Pink House debated against Yellow House on the first night and advanced to debate against last year’s winners Maroon House, in the semifinals. Orange House advanced to the finals after becoming the default winner against a no-show Purple House. Maroon reclaimed their title after beating Orange House by a mere three points in the finals. Best speakers for each debate were: Zipporah Bannister, Juron Dupie, Samisha Connor and Kevin Thompson. Overall best speaker went to Kevin Thompson of Maroon House.
The Society received a cheque of $3000 from the Anguilla Social Security Board.
The members of the ALHCS Literary and Debating Society will be headed to St. Maarten in February 2016 to defend their title as 2015 Leeward Islands Debating Competition champions.
