On Tuesday 20th, 2015 members of the Anguilla Youth Parliament (AYP) visited the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School, Campus A, general assembly. This courtesy call came on the back of efforts by the AYP to carry out its mandate stated in the aims and objectives of engaging youth in civics. This was the first step of many to be introduced as the AYP seeks to be transformational leaders in Anguilla’s governance and development ethos.
AYP Chief Minister, Clemvio Hodge, stated: “We, as youth parliamentarians, can only do our job in proposing legislation and advocating on your behalf if we know what issues are affecting you. As youth, we are transformational and have come up with new ways of reaching you. One of those ways is to have our HOA meetings posted on YouTube and Facebook in 3-5 minutes segments. There is more we will do and there is much more we can do with your support”.
AYP Deputy Governor, Hackeem Alves, in his remarks encouraged students to get involved with various youth groups and youth-led initiatives across the island. He stated, “It is important that youths take an active role in the governance process of this great nation”.
The AYP members also extended an invitation to students and teachers to attend the upcoming sitting of the AYP in the House of Assembly. The meeting will be held in the evening of November 7 to facilitate the attendance of students and persons who are working.
Members of the Anguilla National Youth Council were also in attendance and gave brief remarks.
