As statistical information continues to be of significant importance to national development in Anguilla, a number of persons have been awarded for their work.
The event, on Thursday evening, October 15, was the Second Statistical Symposium and Awards Ceremony at the National Emergency Operations Centre. It was held under the theme “Empowering our Nation through the use of Quality Statistics –Post 2015 Development Agenda”. The event was the culmination of a series of activities in observance of Statistics Week.
Chief Statistician, Mrs. Lori-Rae Alleyne Franklin, delivered a presentation entitled: “The Organisation of Statistics”. Speaking afterwards, to The Anguillian, she explained that the object of the symposium was not only to award persons for their work, but also to inform them about the role of statistics.
“What we did was a short presentation about the structured approach to statistics. We looked at our mandate and how we go about collecting data,” she explained. “This year we combined the symposium with the award ceremony and the award ceremony, was to acknowledge and honour the persons who really helped us to collect the data from the public.”
The data was collected for the 2011 population census as well as the ad hoc regular surveys each year. These include the visitor exit survey, the consumer price index data, and other statistical information.
The award ceremony was chaired by Mrs. Aunika Webster Lake, the island’s Labour Commissioner who, among other matters, congratulated the enumerators, supervisors and other interview teams for their service. Other persons who participated in the ceremony were Mrs. Brittany Christopher Harris, Statistical Officer; Ms. Odessica Hughes, Statistician; and Mr. Careme Carty, Senior Statistical Officer.
