On Wednesday, September 30th, students at the Orealia Kelly Primary School showcased their story boards at a reading fair held there. The purpose of the reading fair was to encourage reading among the students.
Principal Paula Etienne told the press: “Statistics from the reading scores show that our reading is really low, so we decided as a school to hold the reading fair.”
Each class did a display board summarizing one of the books the students read in class. The storyboards highlighted the elements of story-writing. Students were encouraged to pay attention to all the key elements of the stories they read.
Principal Paula further stated: “The fair highlighted the elements of story-writing which the children can now take into their own creative writing. They had to talk about the setting, characters, author’s mood and the tone of the story”.
All students from Kindergarten to Grade Six, including Special Needs students, took part in the exercise. Students in Grades 3 to Grades 6 were encouraged to explore more comprehension skills and strategies via jingles and games.
The storyboards were judged by teachers from Campus B, Vivian A. Vanterpool Primary School and Orealia Kelly Primary School. The results will be announced on Monday October 5th during General Assembly at the School.
