Mr. Godwin Carty, representative of the Florida Branch of the Anguilla Progressive Association of New York (APANY), is now home partly on vacation and partly on a working visit.
“I am here for somewhat of a vacation and I am trying to do two things at once,” he told The Anguillian. “I am currently working on a project called “The 100 Amazing Anguillians”. This trip involves gathering names of very influential Anguillians who made contributions to the island in various categories – such as politics, entertainment, athletics, religion, the hotel and tourism industries, business, and various other areas that have made a change or contribution to Anguilla.
“We want to put something about their lives together in one area of information. When we want to find information about Anguillians, The Anguillian newspaper is the only one that comes up. We want to publish a book about these influential Anguillians who made contributions to Anguilla over the last fifty years, including those who were part of the Revolution.
Mr. Carty added: “The year 2016 will be twenty years of APANY’s giving back to Anguilla for education and the elderly. On behalf of our overall President, Carlson Connor, we are looking to have a grand celebration in New York in June 2016. We will put on a big show to celebrate all the contributions of our organisation in giving back to Anguilla.”
Mr. Carty said that the Florida Branch of APANY was growing well. “We have a celebration every year at the end of July,” he observed. “APANY in New York is a lot bigger, having been around for upwards of twenty years. Our organisation is mostly between New York and the South Florida area; and we are now in discussion to form a branch in Atlanta where there are some Anguillians.”
He spoke about a number of APANY’s plans to be involved in more community assistance plans, in Anguilla, including scholarships, assisting the Red Cross and being of further help to the elderly. He also mentioned a community centre which, he said, was among the dreams of Mr. Carlson Lloyd, President of APANY.
