Ms. Jocelyn Johnson (Chief Probation Officer) and Mrs. Ornette Edwards-Gumbs (Deputy Director Human Resource Management) returned to the island on Saturday September 26th following a one-week training in Chile. The training TRANSPARENCY AND GOOD PRACTICES IN PUBLIC SECTOR MANAGEMENT exposed participants representing CARICOM and CARICOM Member States to best practices in the Singapore Public Service, as well as changes being undertaken in Chile in pursuit of a more responsive and professional Public Service.
Both Ms. Johnson and Mrs. Edwards-Gumbs agree that what was presented and discussed makes for a more effective and professional civil service, and hope that more senior persons in the Anguilla Public Service could also be exposed to such training.
The takeaway for Ms. Johnson and Mrs. Edwards-Gumbs is that as a Public Service, “the citizen is the center of our actions.” The dedicated focus on ongoing training and development of both the Singapore and Chilean Public Service was indeed impressive, and the focus was not only on professional development but personal interests and hobbies which they feel encouraged the idea of learning.
Ms. Johnson and Mrs. Edward-Gumbs said that they hope to begin in small ways to influence the understanding and perceptions of civil servants as to their role and obligation.
They wish to extend thanks to the Singapore Government, the Chilean Civil Service and the Government of Anguilla for their support.
