Students at the Alwyn Allison Richardson’s Primary School at West End are returning to school on Monday, September 7, when they will receive backpacks containing an assortment of well-needed classroom supplies. The 200 bags, of varied contents, were donated by a number of Viceroy Anguilla’s guests as part of the Resort’s adoption of the school.
Detailes about the gift bags were given to the Principal of the school, Ms. Marcia Gumbs, and her staff when they were entertained at Aleta Restaurant on Friday, August 21.
The Resort’s Special Events Manager, Ms. Nekyra Rogers, said the bags, containing the classroom essentials for younger and older children, also contained greeting cards for them from the guests. There were also blank cards to allow the children to respond by expressing their thanks and appreciation when the gifts are presented to them at the reopening of the school.
Ms. Rogers took the opportunity to underscore the importance of the tourism industry to the economy and employment in Anguilla, and the support which the students, and the people in general, should give to tourism.
Mr. Todd Yamoko, Viceroy’s Resort Manager, spoke about the need to assist schoolchildren and of the necessary caring, nurturing and mentoring they need to create a spark in their lives. He commended the teachers for their work among the students, saying that what they were doing was of great value and would have much impact on generations to come.
He hoped that Viceroy’s relationship with the school, together with that of its colleagues, some of whom have children attending the school, would go a long way in helping the principal, staff and students to achieve their goals.
Replying on her own behalf and that of her staff, and the students, the principal observed that the provision of the classroom supplies was a great way to start the new school year. She was grateful to Viceroy and its guests for their contributions to the school and for their appreciation of its work.
