UWI Open Campus Anguilla Launches Public Health Forum Series With Session on Hypertension

Dr. Sherlan Richardson, Dr. Page Edgar and Mrs. Vernice Battick were the key speakers at the launch of the UWI Open Campus/Anguilla Medical and Health Professionals Public Health forums. The timely session on “The Silent Killer – Hypertension” was chaired by Dr. Rona Hodge and drew a wide a varied audience at the Dominion Faith Centre in the Valley.

Dr. Richardson presented an overview of hypertension/high blood pressure, while Dr. Edgar outlined the various complications associated with the disease, including the effects on men and women. Coordinator Nutrition & Health Promotion at the Health Authority of Anguilla, Mrs. Vernice Battick provided detailed guidance on nutrition, meal planning and lifestyle. After the presentations, the panelists fielded quite a number of questions from the audience and helped to dispel a number of myths. All the medical and health professionals including those in the audience emphasised the importance of diet and exercise in the prevention and treatment of hypertension/high blood pressure. The audience also expressed their appreciation for the hosting of the session, while Miss Britnee Williams, President Guild of Students UWI Open Campus – Anguilla Chapter gave the vote of thanks.

Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks, Manager for the UWI Open Campus British Overseas Territories, is also expressing appreciation to Dr. Richardson, Dr. Edgar, Mrs. Battick and Dr. Hodge, as well as Pastor and Mrs. Dexter Welcome of the Dominion Faith Centre and all those who partnered with the UWI Open Campus Anguilla on this community outreach activity. Plans are also underway for the next session which is scheduled to take place in September.
