Celebrating 75 Years Of Boat Racing

Tuesday August 18th saw a large gathering of captains, crew members, family and friends as well as fans of boat racing at Government House in celebration of the 75th anniversary of boat racing in Anguilla.

Speakers at the event included the Governor, Christina Scott and Hon. Cardigan Connor, Minister of Youth and Sport.

Governor Scott briefly thanked the captains and crew members for a wonderful and competitive season of Anguilla’s national sport. She also thanked the families of the crew members as well as their fans for their enthusiasm and continued support over the years for the sport. Ms. Scott congratulated the Super Star for capturing the title of Champion of Champion as well as the Sonic for being named the Boat of the Year.
In Mr. Connors brief remarks he made mention of government’s commitment to work closely with the Boat Racing Association to raise more funds in order to ease the financial burden on the mettlesome boat owners. He also urged the fans, and those who follow the races, to donate back to the sport. Mr. Connor thanked the members of the Boat Racing Association for all they have done over the past year to keep the sport alive. He also thanked the sponsors and fans. He alluded to August Thursday becoming bigger and better in years to come.
