As part of the Gender Affairs Unit’s celebration of Men’s Week 2015, men and their children came together in sport and healthy competition. On Saturday, 27 June there was fun, food, games and an exciting cricket match in Blowing Point. One team was led by Parliamentary Secretary Cardigan Connor and the other by Minister Curtis Richardson in support of the first annual Fathers Festival game day.
Minister Richardson noted that “Blowing Point has always been a village that has excelled in sport, so it is fitting that we celebrate the first Fathers Festival with a sporting event.” He continued to explain that fathers are the foundation of the community and events like these emphasize the importance of not just fathers, but the active involvement of men in the community.
“Men’s Week 2015 has brought to the forefront the exceptional men in our communities and it is a privilege for us here in Blowing Point to host the final event of the week,” states Minister Richardson. “I would like to acknowledge the hard work of the organizing team: Dr. Ronya Foy Connor, Delano Mussington, Fiona Wilkinson, Jemima Romney and the Blowing Point Youth Development Centre.”
Parliamentary Secretary Connor highlighted that “It was a pleasure to be here in Blowing Point taking part in this cricket match for a good cause. Sport is an excellent avenue for uniting men of different age groups. As you can see here, we have Chesney Hughes Senior playing alongside youngsters such as Demari Prince. Sport brings people together in a fun way, and we did have fun this afternoon.”
“I would like to thank Omari Banks and Delano Mussington for coordinating this cricket match and I look forward to the REMATCH!” Parliamentary Secretary Connor concluded by exclaiming that “it is important that sport be inclusive and the discipline of sport be passed on throughout the generations. Community events like these are perfect as players and spectators can both enjoy.”
