Ms Palmavon Webster, Elected Representative for District 1 and Opposition Leader in the Anguilla House of Assembly, has given her support and appreciation for the Queen Birthday Party for many young people across the island.
Ms Webster, an Attorney-at-Law, with a passion for youth development, has established community and youth centres at Island Harbour and Pond Ground. She saw the Queen Birthday Party at Government House on Thursday, June 11, as a recognition of, and an appreciation for, the island’s young people.
“First, I want to commend the Governor for having the vision to see that this could be very positive thing,” Ms. Webster told The Anguillian. “I look around me and I see very young women and very young men looking so positive and I am just proud of them. The respect and friendship among them show how socially mature they are and that we have a world of opportunity with our young people.
“We often focus on the negatives, but this is an environment where you can see our young persons, who had challenges, included in the event. I have just come across several young people who previously had issues, but who are here and I feel so happy about that. I spoke to a young man and he told me how inspiring this is to him. I see young chefs and other young people interested in fashion, and many, many more, all in a fine array of garments. I find it very inspiring.”
Ms. Webster added: “In the Department of Youth and Culture, we have so many persons working to support what is happening here. I want to mention persons like Angelina Carty, Shellya Rogers and Bren Romney. What they are doing is amazing. It started with initiatives by persons like Hyacinth Bradley and I want to say that the young people here are in a good place, previously reserved for older and more accomplished persons. I really appreciate seeing our young people here.”
