Dear Sir,
Congratulations and God’s blessings are in order for the AUF team on the resounding victory in the recently held general elections. It is well noted that the AUF, mindful of the challenges ahead, has thus far approached the victory with much grace and dignity which undoubtedly speaks volumes to the level of respect for the people and the country. It also sends a strong message for peace and togetherness amongst our people, which is long overdue.
Whilst the campaign was very testy at times, absolutely none of the parties can claim to have been totally free of mudslinging whether on the platform or the various radio programs or during the debates. However, the electorate spoke clearly that the style and tone of campaigning which was employed during the 2010 election did not work in the 2015 election. The parties would need to do a significant amount of critical introspection and less criticism or blame of everyone else.
Much praise and blessings are also in order to the lone opposition member. Whilst it is commendable that, as an independent candidate, Ms. Webster was able to garner that level of support, it is even more inspiring that she complements the historical aspect of three females being elected to the House of Assembly at the same time. This also demonstrates a level of maturity in Anguillian politics, in that so many women aspired and were successful in the general election. With this also in mind, we expect the tone and conduct of the House of Assembly to be more civil and given the rightful respect which has been lacking for a very long time.
Undoubtedly, there will be naysayers but we live in a democracy – let’s hope our people can respect the decision of the masses. The ANGUILLIANS who travelled HOME to vote indicated that we must be mindful that our actions at home also impact the minds of the families we cherish – who reside or are pursuing studies abroad. To the persons who had issues with the individuals who came HOME as usual to vote, on all sides of the political spectrum, who are we to determine when and under what circumstances it is appropriate for ANGUILLIANS to return home? Why complain or even question these voters at this stage, considering that all the candidates solicited the ANGUILLIAN voter who was overseas, be it by country visits, advertisements or even the use of the radio which we all knew captured audiences further afield? Why the hypocrisy now? Some of us are grateful to know that there are ANGUILLIAN communities and organizations in major cities and towns around the world, be it in New York, Miami, Texas, Canada, UK, and St Thomas etc. They do make contributions, they invest, and they assist our people. Or would we be more grateful for handouts and assistance from non-nationals? It is sad that we are so insular and shortsighted.
To all ANGUILLIANS, at home and abroad, let us all support the elected Government. Be vigilant and mindful of the bigger picture. At this early stage of this Government’s term, let us refrain from entertaining and forecasting negativism as this is an unfruitful and immature approach. None of us is gifted with knowing everything but together, with faith, open mindedness, honesty, selflessness, dedication and national pride, we can achieve much. Only God knows our future and we must trust that he will continue to guide us as we navigate through the many inevitable challenges which lie ahead.
