Physical Therapy can help your Sciatica

Sciatica is a symptom of pain down the leg that people may experience because of a low back problem. The sciatic nerve begins at the low back and travels through the buttock and down to the leg and foot.

Some of the causes resulting in sciatica include herniated or bulging disc, stenosis or narrowing of the nerve space or tight muscles.

Symptoms associated with sciatic may include: pain, tingling, numbness, burning, cramping and weakness in the muscles of the affected leg.
Many people with sciatica symptoms put themselves on bed rest thinking it will be beneficial, but most times the opposite is true.

Here are some strategies that you can start doing to prevent back pain:

• Perform regular strengthening and stretching exercises to keep your back, stomach, and leg muscles strong and flexible.
• Maintain good posture – don’t slouch!
• Use good body positioning at work, home, or during leisure activities.
• Keep the load close to your body during lifting
• Ask for help before lifting heavy objects, and always bend your knees.
• Use an assistive device, such as a wheelbarrow, to transport heavy objects
• Maintain a regular physical fitness regimen—staying active can help to prevent injuries

Sciatica Success Story
One of my memories of treating a patient was from one who was suffering from sciatica and low back pain. He had pain for several years prior to coming to Island Physical Therapy. We were able to find the correct treatment and specific exercises for him. In just a few sessions he was pain free. Sometimes, depending on the severity and irritability of the area, it may require a little more time to eliminate symptoms. The most important thing to remember is: there is a solution!

Call Dr. Richardson for more information or to make an appointment for a complete assessment.
