Omololu International School (OIS) was the site of many unique and exciting educational opportunities during the week of April 27, all designed to encourage community involvement and foster good will among the students. First, Teacher Judy “The Drum Lady” came by to lead students in grades 3 and 4 in a team building exercise through the use of drums and other percussion instruments. The activity focused on respecting one another, listening to what others are saying, and working together as a group to create something bigger than oneself. That same afternoon, students in Grades 5 and 6 visited the First Annual STEM Career Fair. STEM refers to the combination of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics used in many modern careers and the students were able to walk from booth to booth learning about the many options they will have as they get older.
Hinging on that same idea, on Wednesday the school celebrated their own “Organization Day” when students we encouraged to wear a shirt representing an organization that they support or are a part of. Students wore shirts covering groups as diverse as sports teams, girl scouts, church groups, and many others. Many students opted to simply wear their Omololu International School uniforms, stating that all students and teachers at the school were a part of that organization and they were proud to represent it. Additionally, during the morning assembly that day, members of the OIS PTA presented a check for $320 US to the AXA Food Bank. The money was raised during a recent raffle held by the PTA.
Thursday the students continued to celebrate organizations with a morning of service. Working in partnership with the Department of the Environment, the entire school traveled to Shoal Bay East where they were able to collect 12 garbage bags of trash in under 2 hours. Students used this opportunity to celebrate both Earth Day, which is celebrated internationally on April 22, and Labour Day on May 1st. “I’m glad that we were able to give something back to Anguilla and make the beach a little cleaner, ” said one student.
To celebrate the students’ hard work, OIS took Thursday afternoon as its annual Kite Day, where students and parents could be seen launching a variety of kites, untangling string, and socializing before the three day weekend.
All these activities are examples of Omololu’s continued emphasis on reaching out to the Anguilla community as a whole through inviting guest speakers to come to the school and engaging in partnerships with government departments and groups around the island.
Omololu International School embraces and holistic and experiential approach to learning about our world, equipping students with meaningful understanding and skill sets to lead successful lives and to make a positive contribution to society.
