Dear Mr Editor:
FORWARD NEVER! BACKWARD EVER!
The announcement of a woman from Northern Ireland as the new Commissioner of Police of Anguilla is not only sad but also blatantly disgraceful. My God, not in this day and age when Anguillians should be looking towards self-governance and ultimately independence.
I may be wrong but, in my view, the appointment smacks of racism and suggests that we are yet to be emancipated from slavery.
I cannot understand how a Hubert Hughes-led Government, in this day and age, could sit back and allow the recruitment of a European to fill such a post when there are suitably qualified persons in the Caribbean, if not in Anguilla, who could have filled it. For this reason I have decided not to vote for the AUM, and I have heard many others saying that they will do likewise.
A most disturbing tendency which is beginning to rear its ugly head in our society, in recent times, is that colour of skin is becoming a determining factor in who gets certain jobs. This tendency leads me to raise the question as to why the new nomination forms for candidates for political office have a column for ethnicity? Why is that a requirement in 21st century Anguilla? I would like Chief Minister Hughes to answer that question!
Anguillians, you are becoming the laughingstock of the Caribbean. Wake up or you are going to lose your country.
The motto of the Anguilla United Movement is forward ever, backward never. But what we are seeing instead is FORWARD NEVER! BACKWARD EVER!
Lord have mercy on us. Have mercy on Anguilla.
Sincerely
A very angry son of the soil
