Shouts of, “Over the water! Over the water!” permeated the electric atmosphere as cyclists of Anguilla’s local cycling team, Double Trouble, dominated the youth races of 2nd Annual Delta Petroleum/ASM Cycling Grand Prix which was held in St. Martin on March 28th and 29th, 2015. The shouts were not from the many local cycling enthusiasts who had journeyed to St. Martin but from the St. Martiner’s themselves who were quite impressed with the performance of the Anguillian cyclists.
This year the event saw participants from Anguilla, St. Martin/Maarten, Martinique, Guadeloupe and other neighbouring islands. While Anguilla emerged victorious on Sunday afternoon, the courses of the Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning races proved difficult with their hilly terrains. Nevertheless, the cyclists remained undaunted and were determined to complete the race, which most were able to do.
Gratitude is extended to the proprietors of the Niki V and Samantha, Navin Connor and Samuel “Blues” Connor, as well the captain, Richard Romney for the reduced fares given the cyclists and supporters. Special thanks also to the Government of Anguilla for the waiver in Government Departure Tax and Anguilla Air & Seaport Authority for waivers in the security tax. Much appreciation is extended to the parents who journeyed over to St. Martin to assist and support the teams.
