An initiative by the Lunch Group of the Mount Fortune Seventh-day Adventist Church, which occasionally entertains members and visitors at special events, is expected to be of much support to less fortunate congregation members as well as to persons in the community eventually.
The initiative was launched on Saturday, March 14, just before the midday service. Community Services Leader, Ms Karen Fleming, told the congregation – which included personnel from the Department of Social Development – that the idea was that of the church’s Lunch Group whose spokesperson was Mrs Alma Gumbs.

Mrs Gumbs said that the church believed that charity begins at home, and that the Lunch Group was aware of the difficulties being experienced by some of the congregation members and had therefore decided on the food initiative. She indicated that in time the effort would be extended to needy cases in the wider community.
At the time of its launch, the food pantry contained a stock of neatly-packed groceries amounting to a cost of one thousand Easter Caribbean dollars.
The initiative was endorsed by Pastor Trent Berg who spoke briefly at the event.
