As part of the Women’s Week celebration, LIME, the leading telecommunication company, collaborated with the Gender Affairs Unit, and hosted the LIME Young Women’s Chat on Wednesday 11th March – Under the theme “Like Yourself”.
Young women activists from various parts of the community, who hold various positions throughout Anguilla, were the main speakers, including: Vanessa Thompson, teacher at the ALHCS, Rochelle Rogers, Sex Educator, Melisha Maccow, founder of the Faith Foundation, Tirichmir Gumbs, law student and Jade Reymond, Marketing Manager LIME.
LIME reached out to the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School, as well as the Community centres throughout the island, to nominate 40 young women who they felt would benefit from this engaging, encouraging and inspiring evening, filled with topics that would impact how they viewed life. Topics included Emotional Abuse, Confidence, the Sensationalization of the Female Body, Dangers of using the Internet, Sex Education and Birth Control, and the theme: Like Yourself.
The evening started with a riveting spoken word by Sharifa Honora and Dana Campbell. The four-hour evening was spent interacting with the young ladies about the different topics mentioned above.
The evening ended with a young lady speaking to her peers about her experiences (Ameka Richardson) and how to truly, not just like, but love yourself.
Her presentation was most touching, as she was able to share her expereinces, as well as how to overcome challenges.
LIME’s Marketing and Communciations Manager, Jade Reymond said “We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate Women’s Week than including young women from the community who will someday become the women we are today.
Much encouragement is fostered when we work together. The group of women who spoke at the event are passionate and inspiring. I am sure that the young ladies left feeling motivated and loved. That was the purpose. LIME is pleased to be able to host this event. We look forward to doing this as often as we are presented with the opportunity. ”
Ronya Foy Connor of the Gender Affairs Unit, said ” The LIME Young Women’s Chat was a wonderful opportunity to engage young girls during a full line-up of Women’s Week activities. It is part of the Gender Affairs Unit’s vision to see every young lady operating at her fullest potential. I am personally grateful to Jade Reymond for not just seeing the need for such a forum, but for acting on it in true LIME fashion: “Superfast.” I look forward to future collaborations.”
LIME wishes to thank everyone involved! Especially all of the women involved with speaking, assisting, preparing or attending the event. We look forward to hosting the event soon.
