As part of the ongoing observance of the Department of Probation’s 10th Anniversary, members of the Anniversary Planning Committee have selected the drawing of Mr. Alvin Payne for the Department’s Logo. Mr. Payne was amongst 16 entrants from HMP who submitted a total of 26 drawings for consideration. Mr. Payne’s image identified with the mission of the Probation Department and has captured elements of our national emblems.
Members of the Planning Committee commented on the level of talent exhibited by all persons who participated and commended all participants for their contributions, particularly; Rolandito Richardson, Akeem Rogers, Ishmael Thomas-Carty, Gary Fleming & Alvin Payne for what members saw as “stand out submissions.”
In a brief ceremony held at HMP on Tuesday 17th February, 2015 Chief Probation Officer, Ms. Jocelyn Johnson outlined how the decision was made which included the following:
? The logo selected was relevant to our organization’s Mission and Vision which speaks to being a catalyst for change and reducing criminal behaviour of persons whom serve.
? It bridged the gap in speaking to the pride of our people by the use of one or more national symbols. This was done while recognizing the role of the Department as an alternative and an avenue for change and new beginnings
? It reflected the role of the Department of Probation as part of the criminal justice system while also recognizing that there is a commitment to the people that we serve and the community that we are charged to protect.
? Lastly, the logo selected was simple and direct. And most importantly would be easy to recognize.
Ms. Johnson then presented Mr. Payne with a number of art supplies which included paints, canvases, sketch pads and coloured pencils, on behalf of the Planning Committee. Additionally, members of the 10th Anniversary Planning Committee from the Department of Probation, Superintendent of Prison-Mr. Conrad Gumbs as well as members of the Rehabilitation Unit gave brief remarks to the participants.
In closing, participants were encouraged to utilize their skillful talents and to pursue positive future endeavours.
