The Central Christian School at Rey Hill observed Commonwealth Day on Monday, March 9, with a two-fold event. On one hand, a number of students and teachers wore national dress or colours depicting selected countries and participated in presentations on the history of the territories.
On the other hand, there were displays of national dishes of Anguilla, Barbados, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, St Lucia, Belize, Jamaica, Antigua & Barbuda and St Vincent & the Grenadines.
Speaking at the event, Acting Principal, Ms Maria Reid, stated: “The Commonwealth seeks to bring new perspective and ideas to young people. In keeping with this year’s theme, ‘A Young Commonwealth’, we have decided to focus on diversity and values.”
Ms Reid continued: “We live in a multicultural Anguilla and it is important for our students to be aware of, and have appreciation for, various cultures. Respect and tolerance for each other is also important.
“In order to enforce diversity, values, tolerance and respect, we added the national dish of the countries selected for our celebration this year. Food always brings people together. We hope to create that bond here today.”
