Team Unity won Monday’s controversial general election in St Kitts-Nevis, defeating the St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party of outgoing Prime Minister, Dr Denzil Douglas, thus ending that party’s 20-year rule.

Team Unity, an amalgamation of three parties – the Peoples Action Movement, the Peoples Labour Party and the Concerned Citizens Movement in Nevis – defeated the St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party 7 to 3 seats. The Nevis Reformation Party won one seat.

Dr Douglas, who was seeking to achieve 25 years of political power, making him the longest-serving Caribbean politician, conceded defeat shortly after the official election results were announced on Tuesday, after a considerable delay.

Dr Timothy Harris, leader of the People’s Labour Party, and Team Unity, will now be the new Prime Minister of St Kitts-Nevis. He was expected to be sworn in by Governor General, Sir Edmund Lawrence, on Wednesday morning, but that was reportedly refused by the Head of State pending the presentation of a hard copy of the election results presumably from the Supervisor of Elections.
