Sixth form technical students in the Home Economics Department, at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School, are doing very well in pastry-making and other related delicacies, as many of them prepare for the island’s hospitality industry.
A group of the students, under the direction of Mr Karl Woodley, Head of that Department, turned out an array of baked products – a mouth-watering and sugary temptation – for members of the public and teachers alike. Speaking at the event just days ago, Mr Woodley said: “We have here pastries; two different types of bread –the butter bread and the dinner rolls; carrot cake, a passion fruit cake, a plain cake; some Danish pizza bits; chocolate muffins and some cookies.”
He continued: “We have started a new course in September 2014 in baking and pastry. What we have here are some products made by the students. We are preparing them for the industry because we are getting a lot offers for persons interested in pastry-making, so we have decided to add that course to what we already have at the school. We have a Hotel Management Programme, a Culinary Arts Programme, which is cooking, for Fourth and Fifth Forms and we now have this Baking and Pastry Programme for Sixth Form in the technical area.”
He was pleased to report that some of the Sixth Form technical students had gained admission to the Anguilla Community College and from there into the hospitality industry. Some of them had also made their way into the Anguilla National Culinary Team.
The students at the school were able to do their baking using the school’s equipment. Asked whether the facilities were adequate, Woodley replied: “We have the basics, but always need more. If we had the right equipment, we would definitely be able to do better work.”
