Dear Haydn Hughes and Sam Webster
You continue to lie about me, in support of my opponent in the forthcoming elections, your AUM candidate Dr Lorenzo Webster.
At your party’s “Launch Meeting” on 3rd May 2014, Sam Webster made misleading and unjustified defamatory remarks about the role of my law firm in an unsuccessful application by an investor to secure government approval for his bid to acquire Malliouhana. By letter dated 4th May 2014 my lawyers requested from him (a) an immediate written apology; (b) an undertaking not at any time in the future to repeat his slanderous allegations; and (c) an undertaking to advise all of his colleagues and others within his party to desist from such scurrilous activity at any time.
Not content with that attempt by Sam to damage me, you, Haydn, at your meeting in St Maarten last Saturday, decided that truth should be totally abandoned (a device at which you appear to be very adept) and that you would pump up the false picture you are evidently so desparate to create, by inventing the lie that I myself was the lawyer present at the meeting with government on 15th November 2011. You even went so far as to say “… and his [the investor’s] lawyer sat there right next to him …. and that lawyer today is an independent candidate running against Dr Ellis Lorenzo Webster”. You perpetrated that lie despite the fact that I was not present at that meeting with government, as Sam Webster knew only too well when he stated publicly on 3rd May 2014 that it was someone else from my firm who was present, nor was I involved in advising the investor on the terms he was seeking.
In addition, you falsely alleged that the investor’s proposals for the MoU entailed no Anguillians being employed and no Anguillian heavy equipment being used. I am advised by my professional colleagues that the investor’s draft MoU included the following provisions that were approved by the government’s legal team in advance of the meeting:
• The Government and the Developer recognize that initially, it will be necessary to bring in certain key personnel associated with the design, planning, sale and operation of the Project. By no stretch of the imagination does that suggest that the main workforce will not be Anguillian.
• To utilize the heavy equipment available on the island where such equipment has the capacity to do the required work and is available in a timely manner to Developer at a competitive price. Again, by no stretch of the imagination is this a refusal to use suitable available Anguillian heavy equipment, as alleged. On the contrary, it is agreeing to do so.
If you and your colleagues have so little regard for the truth when unjustifiably seeking to character assassinate an individual, and are willing to engage in what can only be described as lies and innuendo, let the electorate be the judge of how far they can trust anyone in your party or anything you and your colleagues say on your political platforms.
Your party’s mantra “roots of integrity” is clearly as false as your misrepresentations. If Dr Lorenzo Webster places any value on integrity and the truth, he will denounce your underhand tactics, which are a blatant attempt to undermine the democratic process. If he does not do so, the voters can draw their own conclusions about his claims to integrity.
Yours sincerely,
Pam Webster
