The Adrian T. Hazell Primary School (ATHPS) is gearing up for its Commonwealth Day sports celebrations with a number of academic and sporting competitions. Most of the events will involve the student participation under the school’s three-house system: Blue (Turtle Doves), Yellow (Hummingbirds) and Green (Killy-Killys). The events commenced last November with a numeracy quiz which was very keenly contested. The results were Green 60 points, Blue 55 points and Yellow 52 points.
The most recent event was a Spelling Bee which was also a thrilling contest. The students were all enthusiastic, tense and hopeful as the final results were read – Blue House in second with 37 points and Yellow and Green houses tied for first place with 40 points each.
Not to be outdone by the students, the teachers at the school too have joined in the fun and games. The staff of the school was randomly divided in two teams – Terrific Tornados and Overcomers. The first of the staff competitions took place on Friday 30th January, 2015 in the form of an exhilaratingly entertaining cricket match for all involved. The game was hard fought as members of both teams demonstrated their cricketing prowess with great skill. The Overcomers emerged victorious on this occasion – 113 to 92.
The intensity of that game further heightened the friendly rivalry between the two teams. The next match up is anticipated to be take place in about two or three weeks, and the Terrific Tornados are determined to turn the tables this time around in whichever sporting discipline is selected.
It is hoped that these exhibition games will serve as a form of positive motivation for the students of the school. The culminating events will take place the week of Friday March 6th 2015, the day for which our annual school inter-house Commonwealth sports is scheduled.
A heartfelt thank you to Mr. Chaka Hodge and Mr. Jahmar Hamilton for officiating the game, to Mr. Warren Buddle and Mr. Michel Morton for sponsoring the T-shirts for the teams, and our parents for their unwavering support of the staff and students of the ATHPS during these events. Your contributions are without a doubt invaluable and are indeed greatly appreciated.
