The Commissioner of Police reported that it has come to the attention of the Police that several persons are engaging in the illegal trials for speed and drag racing using cars and motor bike on the roads of Anguilla.
The Commissioner wishes to advise all persons engaged in such practice to cease fort wit since the same contravenes section 53 of the Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, of the Revised Statutes of Anguilla Chapter V10 which states;
Racing speed trials
53. (1) Any person who promotes or takes part in a race or trial of speed between motor vehicles on a road is guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to a fine of $10,000.00 or to imprisonment for a term of 4 months or to both.
(2) A person convicted of an offence under this section shall, unless the Court for special reason thinks fit to order otherwise and without prejudice to the power of the Court to order a longer period of disqualification, be disqualified from holding a driver’s licence for a period of 12 months from the date of conviction or, if there is an appeal against conviction, from the date on which the conviction is upheld.
The police were summoned to two areas namely Blowing Point and Stoney Ground over the weekend because of such practice. Those involved must be reminded of the danger that such practice presents to the motoring public, pedestrians as well spectators at such occasions.
All are encouraged to govern themselves accordingly.
