The management and staff of Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP), Anguilla received training in fire prevention practices from the Anguilla Fire and Rescue Service (Fire Prevention Team) over a three day period last week.
According to Head of Custody, Ms. Carice Sasso, It is imperative that the Management and Staff of HMP be trained in fire drills. Although, a fire may not be a frequent occurrence, it is always good to be cognizant that it is likely for a fire to take place at any time. With the help of the Anguilla Fire and Rescue Service, HMP Staff was given an opportunity to enhance our knowledge on fires and what to do in the event of a fire. The major risks in an institution such as HMP include electrical faults, kitchen fires, and smoking. It is therefore very critical that an organization such as ours have in place fire detecting and safety equipment, as well as an emergency plan. Safety measures, including fire drills, will go a long way in preventing major accidents and damage as a result of a fire.
In the near future with the help of the Anguilla Fire and Rescue Service and the HMP plans to partake in an evacuation fire drill exercise that will better equip staff on how to react in the event of fire.
On behalf of the Management and Staff of HMP, Anguilla, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Anguilla Fire and Rescue Service especially, Mr. Shondell Hodge – Fire Station Officer, Mr. Carlisle Lake – Lead fire fighter and Mr. Omari Bourne – Fire fighter/fire prevention officer for ensuring that this training was a success.
