Welcome to the first 2015 column of “The Gender Corner,” published in collaboration with the Anguillian Newspaper. Through this publication we hope to provide thought-provoking and stimulating discussion on gender-related matters. This week we outline the upcoming activities in Gender Affairs for the New Year. As always, you are encouraged to collaborate with the Unit and participate in each of these events.
January 12 GEMS Public Service Workshops
– March 1 Focuses on public service training for implementing Gender Equality Mainstreaming and Sensitivity into daily work. Workshop topics include an Introduction to Gender, Human Rights and Violence; Strategies for Gender Mainstreaming; Conducting a Departmental Gender Analysis; and Gender-Responsive Budgeting.
Mid-February Design Anguilla Magazine “Women’s Issue”
In honour of International Women’s Day and Women’s Week, Anguilla’s Leading Lifestyle Magazine will feature unique stories about notable women in Anguilla, both past and present, who are influencing and impacting community growth, business innovation and government leadership.
March 8 2nd Annual Women’s Week
– March 14 This year’s celebration commences recognising women in the hospitality industry. The week features radio interviews with 15 women in the Anguillian community discussing their successes, challenges and ability to stay motivated despite obstacles. Events include an International Women’s Day reception sponsored by Her Excellency, the Governor, Ms. Christina Scott.
June 21 2nd Annual Men’s Week
– June 27 Men’s Week launches for a second year, correspondingly recognising men in the hospitality industry. Fifteen men in the Anguillian community will be highlighted on Radio Anguilla to discuss their accomplishments, trials and ability to stay encouraged despite hurdles. Events include a Father and Son Prayer Breakfast in appreciation of Father’s Day.
Nov 25 16 Days of Activism
– Dec 10 Includes events geared towards promoting social justice and human rights in Anguilla; encouraging community service, eliminating poverty and hunger, and ending all forms of violence and discrimination.
