With its constant sun and endless breezes, Anguilla is a perfect place for renewable energy, particularly now that advancing technology in solar and wind power is making it more affordable. The cost of electricity from Anglec has become increasingly more expensive and this in turn adds to the cost of food on the island.
Yet, I have heard nothing from any of the existing members of the Assembly promoting renewable energy as a cost saving program for the benefit of the residents here. (Drag racing apparently is more important.) Sutcliffe Hodge, as a Dove Party candidate, to his credit, spoke in favour of wind and solar power at a political rally recently, but other candidates have not shown the same interest. This is unfortunate because renewable energy should be at the forefront of political discussion and one of the first programmes the new Assembly should address.

In the meantime, St. Kitts-Nevis, as reported in The Daily Herald on 1-10-15, has constructed the first half of a solar farm which will transfer 500 kilometers of energy to the national grid, with what they describe as “massive savings to consumers”. When are we finally going to begin a farm here?

The owners of Anglec, including the government, ought to be leading the charge for clean renewable energy, thus reducing the reliance on dirty fossil fuel and the cost of electricity. They would be managing the new facility and benefiting from significant savings. St. Kitts recognized this. Why can’t Anglec and Anguilla?
