Mr Editor
DOCTOR, YOU NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR
I had a lot of love, respect and admiration for Dr Ellis Webster but that is no longer the case. When he could join forces with Hubert Hughes who was strongly opposed to Anguilla’s quest for freedom from St Kitts – who was strongly opposed to the Anguilla Revolution led by people from Island Harbour and East End – then I feel strongly that something got to be wrong with him.
The groundwork for the prosperity which Anguillians once enjoyed, and which they will enjoy once they get rid of the AUM, was laid between 1967 and 1969; and in those difficult years Hubert Hughes sided with our enemies – sided with Bradshaw and St Kitts – to deny Anguillians the right to chart their own destiny. The people of District 1 (Island Harbour and East End) were in the forefront of the Revolution. They put their lives on the line for Anguilla while Hubert Hughes criticized and opposed their every move.
Dr Webster, by joining Hubert’s party you have betrayed your fellowmen and the cause for which they fought. By joining Hubert’s party you have hurt the feelings of many of the freedom fighters – and you have also shown a lack of respect and appreciation for our struggle.
A next thing which has caused me to change my mind from voting for you is that, at the party leaders’ debate on Wednesday night (26th November) you said that when the annals of Anguilla are written Hubert Hughes will “be right next to” James Ronald Webster. Dr Ellis, that is an insult to the Father of the Nation and you need to apologize. Where in hell could you put them in the same boat?
You too damn forward. Know your place. Ronald is the Father of the Nation. His contribution to Anguilla is unparalleled. Hubert Hughes is not in his class. In fact Hughes’ elevation to political office is one of the worst things that could have ever happened to Anguilla. Both Statchel Warner and Dr Clifton Niles told us, at their debate the other night, that Hubert was a liability to Anguilla. I subscribe to that view, and I challenge people to point at any one thing that Hubert has done for Anguilla. Hubert Hughes has done nothing but create political instability and political conflict throughout the years. That was why David Carty named him Hubert Confusion Hughes. Also, it has been often said that his leadership-style allegedly scared investors away.
Dr Webster, for the above reasons, you will not be getting my vote and the votes of the many people whose feelings you have hurt. And, furthermore, the things you have been saying make me think that you need to see a doctor, allegedly. I may be wrong but, in my view, you ain’t thinking right.
Yours truly
One vote less for the doctor
